On 10th October 2024 our PhenoRob Business and Stakeholder Networking Event “Biodiversity and agriculture: synergies for a sustainable future?” took place. Numerous experts from agriculture, industry, government and academia met with PhenoRob researchers to discuss and propose solutions on how to jointly achieve a “good ecological status”.

Three speakers were invited to give short keynote speeches, followed by an interactive discussion. After the break, participants were invited to take part in a World Café with three thematic tables to discuss policy frameworks, technological innovation and regional networks in smaller groups and to share future visions for biodiversity. The event ended with an open networking session and a PhenoRob poster presentation.

The PhenoRob Business and Stakeholder Networking Event Series thus provides an ideal platform to initiate new projects and stay ahead of the latest developments and trends in digital crop production and to learn about scientific solutions to real-world problems.

The international Landscape 2024 conference brought together around 300 scientists and experts from 38 countries. The Landscape conference is held every three years. This year’s conference was held from 17 to 19 September in Berlin, organised by the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) and hosted by the Humboldt University Berlin (HU). As a partner of the interdisciplinary conference on sustainable agriculture, PhenoRob cooperated with the ZALF.

During the three-day conference, researchers presented their work, developed new approaches and discussed topics related to “Agroecosystems in Transformation: Visions, Technologies and Actors”. Prior to the main conference, which consisted of 32 scientific presentations, participants had the opportunity to attend five workshops and three master classes. After the conference, two excursions were offered, one to the patchCROP landscape laboratory and the ZALF experimental station in Müncheberg, and a second to Uckermarck, a region located north of Berlin, including a visit to the Kerkow estate and the ZALF experimental station in Dedelow.

“Science for everyone to join in!” was the motto of the University of Bonn’s second Wissenschaftsfestival (“Science Festival”) on July 7, 2024. The festival provided numerous examples of the kind of research that takes place at this university of excellence: collaborative work across disciplines to find solutions to societal problems, and the integration of practice and society into research. At the booth of the Humanoid Robots Lab, headed by our PI Maren Bennewitz, our three-armed robot Hortibot demonstrated its skills in recognizing and harvesting peppers.

As one of the 14 Clusters of Excellence from North Rhine-Westphalia, Cyrill Stachniss, Heiner Kuhlmann, Katharina Monaco and Maren Kraus were invited to display the research of PhenoRob.

Top researchers from North Rhine-Westphalia presented their work on June 12, 2024, in the Citizens’ Hall of the Düsseldorf State Parliament. North Rhine-Westphalia is currently the most successful state in the Excellence Strategy nationwide. Of the 57 clusters of excellence already funded, 14 are in North Rhine-Westphalia.

During the parliamentary breakfast, the spokespersons of all clusters were invited to exchange ideas with the members of the parliament, but the exchange between the clusters was also important. Afterwards, there was an exhibition of the Clusters of Excellence, where every member of parliament and interested visitor could find out more about their research.

It was an informative day with many interesting conversations and exchanges about the work of the different Clusters of Excellence, ranging from, of course, agriculture and robotics, to quantum computing, market and public policy analysis – and they all conduct cutting-edge research. The highlight of the day was the visit of Ina Brandes, Minister for Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia, who took the time to engage in a productive exchange and constructive discussion.

Find out more about Cutting-edge research Research “made in NRW” in the YouTube video below and the 14 Clusters of Excellence from North Rhine-Westphalia here.

Organized by the Junior Research Group SoilRob and the PhenoRob excellence cluster, the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) invited stakeholders from science, industry and practice to the third edition of the Field Robotics Day on 30 April 2024 taking place next to the patchCROP landscape laboratory on fields of ZALFs practice partner, Komturei Lietzen GmbH in Brandenburg.

During the field day, the use of field robotics and other innovative technologies was presented and discussed as a key component for the sustainable transformation of future agricultural landscapes. Those should account for site and soil heterogeneity and increase the feasibility of temporal and spatial diversification of crops, fields and landscapes. Intelligent diversification concepts could be used to optimize land use in a way that promotes environmental protection and resource conservation while increasing climate resilience of farms.

In addition to exciting presentations by experts from the sector, the event offered 130 participants an ideal opportunity to network during lunch and beyond.

Watch the highlights of the field day in the YouTube video below and find out more about the SoilRob junior research group here.

On 4th April 2024 our PhenoRob Business and Stakeholder Networking Event “Technology Acceptance in Agriculture” took place. There were numerous participants from agriculture, industry, government and science on site.

The networking, which was the main focus of the event, was more than exceeded. After the exciting panel discussion, the participants had the opportunity to exchange views on various topics in a World Café – what are the required technology characteristics for profitability and sustainability in practice? What relevance do different business models have for the introduction of new technologies? What role does politics play in the introduction of new technologies?

The participants agreed that agricultural practice, science, politics and industry need to further strengthen their exchange to successfully implement new digital and autonomous technologies in practice.

PhenoRob member Prof. Dr. Matin Quaim was thoroughly questioned by his young students during his lecture for the Kinderuni on How to feed the world

The Bonn Youth University initiative “Kinderuni” is aimed at children aged eight to thirteen. It wants to introduce the young students to the world of science and research. The Kinderuni includes lectures from various fields of research, is free of charge and does not require prior registration.

This time, Prof. Dr. Matin Qaim, Director of the Centre for Development Research (ZEF) at the University of Bonn, gave an interactive lecture on “How can we feed everyone?”. The lecture was based on his own research, which focuses on sustainable food systems and food and nutrition security. Together with his students, he looked not only look at the impact of climate change, but also at what they eat in a day and the essentials of a varied and balanced diet.

After his lecture, he had to answer many challenging questions, such as “How many decades will it take before there is no more hunger?” or “Is there enough to eat, but it is not distributed properly?”, which he answered patiently. Together they worked out possible solutions to the questions, taking into account the children’s suggestions.

This semester’s Kinderuni ended with the awarding of diplomas at the beginning of June. However, the Kinderuni will continue on Monday, 13 January 2025 with six brand new lectures.
